The barn I have taken down was built around 1930’s or early by Frank Hawkins. My dad bought the property from Mr. Hawkins in 1968. The center part of the barn frame was logs. The bottom logs were placed on the ground causing then to deteriorate over the years. This caused the barn to slowly lose height and made the barn lean and become somewhat unstable. The wood and logs from the middle part of the barn is around 90 to 100 years old. Two sides were added on later. I took the left side of the barn off 36 years ago to change the direction of the creek. The wood that I recovered is mostly 4/4 thick or thicker. The rafters were 2×6’s of oak and popular. Some of the wood is 35 years old but most is 50 years old or older. The logs are all original. I have classified the wood into four categories. Barn wood (wood that was taken of the sides of the barn), Loft wood (wood that made up the loft and wood that was stored in the barn), 2 bys (2×4’s and 2×6’s), and logs. There is 279 pieces of barn wood with widths from 2 ½ to 20 ½ inches and 20 to 106 ½ inches long. There is 136 pieces of loft wood with widths from 3 ½ to 16 inches and 22 to 146 inches long. Forty-two 2×6’s measuring from 24 to 130 ½ inches long and thirty-six 2×4’s measuring from 29 ½ to 130 inches long. There are 60 logs that are 4 to 19 feet long and with the small end diameter of 4 ½ to 8 1/2 inches. Most of the wood is oak and some popular and the logs are mostly popular. I also have 22 pieces of walnut 5 to 7 inches wide and 42 to 155 inches long and two 3×7’s 55 and 103 inches long. All the wood is stacked and covered. I took pictures of each layer as I stacked the wood. This will enable you to see each board while viewing the wood in person. I can email you a list of the widths and lengths of all the board and lengths and small end diameters of the logs.
